Volubilis

On the way to Fes, we stopped at the Roman ruins of Fes. It’s a very large site, but much in complete ruin. It had been inhabited until the earthquake of 1755 in Portugal, which

brought down many of the structures. There are some interesting things to see, however. It was the site of the kingdom of Juba II and his wife Cleopatra Selene, daughter of Cleopatra and Marc Anthony.

The Capitol building, which was dedicated to the trinity of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva.

The Triumphal Arch, which was built in honor of Marc Anthony and his mother Julia Domna.

My favorite part were the mosaics, that were in people’s homes. One floor mosaic was of the labors of Hercules.

The Gordian Knot

Now we are in the most amazing Riad (hotel) in Fes.
